The Government is overseeing the efforts to help refugees alongside local authorities.
Hammersmith and Fulham have set up a resource hub aimed at teachers which contains information that can help children in primary and secondary schools make sense of the refugee crisis, with a focus on children and their development.
DFE colleagues have asked us to notify you that the government have now published V2 of the School and College Resource Pack. The pack provides helpful resources for institutions with Ukrainian children and young people. They updated the pack following the helpful feedback from many of the council attendees at the special meeting on Early Years, Education and School issues. On the 22 June, the government announced that the Homes for Ukraine scheme will be extended to unaccompanied minors. And on Friday 15 July, the Homes for Ukraine scheme began processing existing applications from children under 18 not travelling with or joining their parent or legal guardian from Ukraine. To support this process and to ensure local authorities are aware of the requirements of the scheme, the government have published detailed guidance here
Education Secretary addresses schools regarding supporting Ukrainian children – Yesterday, Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi sent a letter to schools and LAs congratulating the huge effort they have put in to welcoming families fleeing the war in Ukraine and supporting children accessing education. In the letter, Mr Zahawi sets out the “broad and balanced” curriculum to be offered to Ukrainian pupils, as well as translation services, and details about accessing the Ukrainian curriculum too. DLUHC has has added Ukrainian and Russian translations to the welcome guide for Ukrainians arriving in the UK.
The welcome guide includes information on what Ukrainians need to know in the first few days, getting used to life in the UK including how to find a home, access essential public services, healthcare, find work and childcare and education services. It also includes specific information for those arriving on the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
