There is currently a fantastic opportunity for households to get FREE home improvements through the Energy Company Obligation, also know as ECO. ECO is a scheme that gives funding to energy suppliers to install energy-saving measures, such as loft insulation, wall insulation, heating upgrades and draught-proofing.

This is a really valuable offer and comes completely free of charge to eligible residents. Installing energy-saving measures can have huge benefits to residents, including:

  • Reduced energy bills: loft insulation in a terraced house, for example, can save residents over £300 a year on their energy bills.
  • Reduced risk from cold-related illness: There is a strong relationship between cold temperatures and cardiovascular and respiratory diseases; hospital admissions for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), commonly linked with fuel poverty, are four times more likely to happen over winter.
  • Improved comfort at home: installing energy-saving measures can reduce draughts and improve comfort at home.

One part of the scheme, called ECO Flex, allows the council to work with local installers to identify eligible homes, and in H&F we are trying to maximise this route to support our residents. There are lots of different eligibility routes to getting free works, and so we are contacting key contacts in the community that might be able to direct residents to the support – one of those being schools.

The key eligibility criteria relevant to schools is:

Proxy 4) A householder receiving free school meals due to low income.

Full details of the Council’s criteria are published here: ECO Flexible Eligibility Statement of Intent (v2) | London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham (lbhf.gov.uk)

We are highlighting this as we are aware that some installers will be contacting schools directly to make use of this specific criteria. We want to support schools in identifying genuine offers and make sure these can be relayed to residents who might be able to benefit from the scheme.
