Audience:

Primary Schools – Headteachers, SLT, Interested colleagues, Year 6 teachers

The Local Authority has a statutory responsibility to moderate the end-of-key-stage teacher assessment judgements in at least 25% of schools and academies each year for KS2 writing. Locally, this process is carried out under the direction of the LA Moderation Manager, using a team of appropriately qualified pool moderators that includes school-based colleagues.

Applications are invited from those interested colleagues, with the relevant experience and expertise, who would like to be considered for the role of LA external pool moderator in the 2023/24 cycle. Any teacher who has been or is in Year 6 with class teaching responsibility would find the experience useful for their career development.

In addition, application forms for the lead moderator role are available for those colleagues who have previously been a pool moderator and who would like to take on the lead moderator role.  Lead moderators from last year do not need to fill in the whole form but just contact details and a signature from the headteacher or senior leader responsible for releasing staff for training.

Those who may be new to the role or considering this for the first time are invited to complete an application form and if selected can contact me to arrange a meeting to learn about the role, what it involves, and details of the STA approved training that must be successfully completed before a candidate may be appointed to the role.

This training is mandatory and all candidates must be able to attend a half day’s online training on either:

Lead moderators

• 6th November for KS2 writing in the afternoon

Pool moderators:

• 8^th January for KS2 writing in the afternoon:  To book KS2 Writing Moderator – applications invited for 2024/25 (Pool Moderators) – Learning Partnership (lbhflearningpartnership.com)

This training will be followed by the standardisation exercise which must be successfully completed in order to gain formal STA approval as a lead or pool moderator.

Lead moderator standardisation exercise can take place during the week beginning 6^th November until 17^th 2023. (Actual day to be confirmed and will be after the training)

Pool moderator standardisation exercise takes place during the week starting 8^th January 2023 until 19th (Actual day to be decided and will take place after the training)

Those engaged in this role in the past have described being a moderator as a very valuable and worthwhile professional development opportunity that has wider impact within their own school.
