Hammersmith and Fulham Learning Partnership and Fulham Cross Academy are proud to be hosting a special event highlighting the forgotten history of women of colour and celebrating their achievements.

This invite is for yourself and your students to attend this exclusive event which is being hosted by Fulham Cross Academy on 22 March 2023 to celebrate our diversity and increased representation.

Following the inspiring work of all schools to celebrate Black History and our beautifully diverse borough through the Power of Representation 365 sessions, we will now shine the spotlight on gender equality. Representation of this protected characteristic, as with all the characteristics, is important throughout the year but particularly significant during the month of March as we prepare to celebrate International Women’s Day.

The workshop will shine a light on Sophia Duleep Singh, the Indian princess who fought for women’s rights. Sadly, like many other forgotten women of colour in history, her story remained untold for many decades until recently. Her remarkable story was brought to the screen by Circle Productions during the lockdown period in 2021 (click here for the trailer) and in January this year, Princess Sophia was honoured with a Blue Heritage plaque in London.

As part of this wonderful event, staff and students will enjoy a special screening of the film, ‘Sophia’ which chronicles the princess’ journey. This will be followed by a Q&A session, and we are delighted to announce that this session will be facilitated by the film’s writer and producer, Beverly Andrews.
