Early Years: Private fostering: Important information

Quick Navigation

Nov 6 2025

Did you know that when children live with adults who aren’t close relatives for more than 28 days this is considered private fostering? Did you also know that there is a legal duty to report all private fostering arrangements to the Local Authority?

For this reason, this is something education and health professionals need to be aware of, as often these arrangements only come to light via school or health appointments. Being away from their primary carers may make children more vulnerable and it’s vital we help keep them safe.

If you come across a private fostering arrangement, let Children’s Services know. Your referral could make a big difference.

Spot it. Report it. Support it.

Share the leaflet with your staff members and with the parents via your setting's newsletter to raise awareness about private fostering.
