Creating Schools Where Everyone Belongs
A strong sense of belonging is fundamental to wellbeing, attendance, engagement, learning and positive relationships. Research shows that when pupils feel accepted, valued and included within their school community, they are more likely to attend school regularly, engage in learning, develop positive relationships and experience better mental health. A culture of belonging also benefits staff through increased wellbeing, job satisfaction and connection to the school community.
The importance of belonging is increasingly reflected in national policy. The government's Schools White Paper, Every Child Achieving and Thriving (2026), emphasises the need for schools to create inclusive environments where all children feel engaged, connected and able to thrive, and highlights the importance of reducing absence, strengthening inclusion and building stronger connections between schools and their communities.
To support this work, Hammersmith and Fulham Educational Psychology Service has developed a suite of resources to help schools strengthen belonging for pupils, families and staff. Drawing on psychological theory, research evidence and practical examples, these resources provide schools with a pathway from reflection to action.
Schools may wish to begin with the Belonging Resource Booklet, use the School Belonging Audit Tool to identify strengths and priorities, and then explore the School Belonging Support Pack for more detailed guidance, research and practical strategies.
